DIORAMA "LA DEFENSA DE MADRID 1936"

 - THE SIEGE OF MADRID (1936)  -

The Siege of Madrid was a three-year siege of theSpanish capital city of Madrid during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.

Madrid was held by various forces loyal to the Second Spanish Republic and was besieged by Spanish Nationalist and allied troops (Condor Legion and Italian troops) under Franco.

In a radio broadcast on July 18 1936, the Communist leader Dolores Ibarruri coined the famous slogan ¡No pasarán! ("They shall not pass"), urging resistance against the coup. The slogan became synonymous with the defence of Madrid and the Republican cause in general.

The Battle of Madrid in November 1936 was mainly concentrated fighting in the city, when the Nationalists made their most determined attempt to take Madrid. The city, besieged from October 1936, finally fell to the Nationalists on March 28 1939.

DIORAMA "BIR-HAKEIM 1942"

- The First Free French Division at Bir-Hakeim
May-June 1942
The Foreign Legion 13th Half Brigade (13ème D.B.L.E.)

Bir Hakeim (sometimes written Bir Hacheim) is a remote oasis in the Libyan Desert and the former site of a Turkish fort.
During the Battle of Gazala the First Free French Division of General Marie Pierre Koenig defended the site from 26 May to 11 June 1942 against attacking German and Italian forces directed by General Erwin Rommel. The 2/13e DBLE held positions along the east facade of the French line. The 3/13e DBLE formed mobile reserve groups to reinforce French positions at any threatened point.
Resisting for 16 days, the Free French gave the retreating British 8th Army enough time to reorganize, allowing them subsequently to halt the Axis advance at the 1st Battle of El Alamein.
Churchill has said: “By delaying 15 days the offensive of Rommel, the Free French troops of Bir-Hakeim greatly contributed to secure Egypt and Suez” and French General Bernard Saint-Hillier has added in an October 1991 interview: “A grain of sand had curbed the Axis advance, which reached Al-Alamein only after the arrival of the rested British divisions: this grain of sand was Bir Hakeim”.
